VISITING BARCELONA | |
CITY TOURS SELECTION The visit to Park Güell (www.bcn.es/parcsijardins/pa_guell.htm) deserves at least half a day of dedication. It is advisable to take a bottle of water and some sandwiches to be able to take a calm walk during hours through this enclosure. Gaudí conceived a city garden in which architecture and nature were fused in a space of singular beauty, and he designed the Güell Park (1900-1914). In it, nature becomes architecture and architecture imitates nature as far as forms and colors are considered. The enclosure was declared Universal Monument by the UNESCO in 1984. In the entrance to the park one already finds three colorists fetiche figures of Gaudí: the Salamander, the Serpent and the Pitón dragoon. The initial project ordered by Eusebi Güell consisted the creation of 60 houses that had all the services: water, gas, seware system, illumination, space for a covered market, public square... Although, only two houses were constructed, in the park one can find the most essencial of Gaudí, that achieves a perfect harmony between urbanism and nature. With the Trencadís technique he covers the curves of the banks, figures and columns to obtain to a polichrimatic protector thanks to the recycling of rests of ceramics coming from remainings of factories. In the waved bank that borders the plazaone can find endless symbols and elements: marine shells, butterflies, fleeting stars, constellations... In the Güell Park the creative imagination of Gaudí is overflowded creating a fusion between its fantastic universe and his loved nature, as much as in the architectonic doing as in the small details. In order to go to the Güell Park from Plaza Catalunya one should take the metro(L3) direction Canyelles and to get off at Lesseps or Vallcarca. From both shutdowns it is necessary to walk a few minutes to arrive, following the indications on the street. From Lesseps the main entrance of the park is accessible, presided over by the famous Salamander of colors. From Vallcarca the access is to the high part of the park. Since one is in an elevated zone, the access street is prepared with mechanical stairs to facilitate the access. |
