Theatres in Barcelona

THEATRES

Barcelona is a city of theatres with great history and tradition. Some Catalan companies are internationally known such as Els Joglars, La Cubana, El Tricicle and La Fura dels Baus, mainly for their original shows and their special way of performing.

Some important theatres such as El Liceu, El Palau de la Música and el Teatre Nacional de Catalunya (TNC) are of artistic and cultural interest The Liceu, in Las Ramblas, is the opera house of Barcelona and operas, concerts, recitals and ballets are usually programmed and some special cinema projections also take place there. The modern Palau de la Música, a modernist treasure, has been declared "Heritage of Humanity" by the UNESCO. The Teatre Nacional de Catalunya is the newest building (1996), inspired by the Greek architecture looking like a big crystal box.

Apart from the big theatres, there are many small alternative theatres around the city, in which interesting performances of nouvelle artists are taking place. Those are not commercial and cost less.

Shows are either in Catalan or Spanish.

Palau de la música

The Palau de la Música has been built between 1905 and 1908. It is one of the most important concert halls in the world and one of the most representative of the Modernism. It has been named World Heritage in 1997 by the UNESCO.

The Palau was remodelled and extended from 1982 to 1989, contributing to the the creation of a modern Auditions Room. In 1999 the extension works follows one another and in 2004 the restoration of the interiors of the Palau is carried out. Between 2005 and 2006 the facade will be restored, the remains produced by the pollution will be eliminated and the original materials will recuperated.

This hall has had a great importance for the cultural and artistic life of Barcelona. The day of its inauguration, in February 1909, director Richard Strauss directed the philharmonic of Berlin. Since then, great figures of the music worked in it, such as Igor Stravinsky (in November of 1933 the Stravinsky Festival was celebrated there) or the saxophonist Bennie Carter, in the first session of jazz of the Palau, in 1936. They would be followed by, for example, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington, in 1966.

Liceu

The Gran Teatro del Liceu, built in 1847, in the middle of Las Ramblas of Barcelona. It is an opera house and also one of the symbols of the city. In 1994, it was burnt and consequently completely destroyed a fact that filled people of the city with great sadness. The theatre suffered a previous fire in 1861 very similar to the last one and had to be reconstructed.

This theatre has been the traditional symbol and mirror of the Bourgeoisie of Barcelona and historically has been in the front sight along different social revolts which historically took place in the city of Barcelona (In 1893, a bomb exploded in the inauguration of the new season, killing 20 persons).

Only the central front of Las Ramblas, the main hall and the Lounge of the Mirrors - Salón de los Espejos -, in which people wait before the show, were saved from the fire of 1994.The main hall and the stage were totally destroyed. When rebuilt, a few changes and improvements were incorporated.

The capacity of the main theatre is of 2338 spectators. It is illuminated by peculiar brass lamps shaped as dragons and crystal tulips. The stalls of the theatre pit are made of cast iron and red velvet.
The old lounge already possessed excellent sound because of its special geometry. When it was restored, this unique condition was maintained and significantly improved making the acoustics even better.

El Liceu organises guided visits to all its representative spaces: La Sala, El Salón de los Espejos and el Foyer. Visits are in Catalan, Spanish and English.

There is also a guided tour to the Círculo del Liceu, showing the modern Catalan paintings collection of Ramon Casas.

The Nacional Theatre of Catalonia

The Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, next to the Glòries Square, is a modern building designed by Ricardo Bofill. The main building, shaped like the Partenón, welcomes the greater room, with 900 localities, and the small one, with 300. With a surface of 20,000 m2, it has a metallic ceiling of "two waters" of 12 meters height which is sostained by 26 columns.

The exterior walls are of glass, what makes the building very attractive from the outside. The three main spaces are the lobby, the greater room and the scenic box.
